Description

IC 5146 is an open star cluster linked to a diffuse nebula visible in the constellation of the Cygnus, which due to its shape takes the name of the cocoon nebula (center of the photo).
About 3300 light years away, the cluster and its nebula are in turn connected to a system of dark nebulosity, known by the acronym B 168. In the photo there are also some emission regions, visible in the photograph as red dust, detached and contrasted with respect to the sky background.
The cocoon nebula and its cluster, under dark skies, can be glimpsed through an eyepiece from a telescope with an aperture of at least 200mm. The surrounding dust and gases are only visible with long exposures.
The regions of dark dust and emitting gases have been a very hostile target for us. It took many hours of integration and just as many hours of processing. The cocoon and the most evident powders are also present in the individual frames, the rest are not.
To collect as much signal as possible on this difficult target, Michele Russo and Salvo Semilia joined forces.
The technique used is LHRGB.
