Description

"The Sunflower galaxy was discovered in 1779 by the French astronomer Pierre Méchain and was the first of 24 objects that Méchain would contribute to Charles Messier’s catalog. The galaxy is located roughly 27 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Canes Venatici. It has an apparent magnitude of 9.3""The driving force behind star formation is particularly unclear for a type of galaxy called a flocculent spiral.... do not have well defined spiral arms. Instead, they appear to have many discontinuous arms."
M 63 ... is one such flocculent spiral galaxy. Although it only has two arms, many appear to be winding around its yellow core..." https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2017/messier-63-the-sunflower-galaxyThe work done on the Sunflower galaxy marks my first steps in using the data displayed from Ha and [OIII] with the Siril program thanks to the last sessions made with the Canon Ra and the Extreme filter. I also want to thank Nico Carver for the suggestions that he gave me at that time for the processing of this type of data.

The data for this galaxy were acquired by Maurizio from March to Dec 2020 using the three filters. Here we also incorporate both the use of the new camera and the CEM 70 mount and dithering with APT.

The area where this galaxy is located (near Canes Venatici) you can see various smaller galaxies of different shapes and associated with more celestial bodies. In the Versions section I placed some examples with their annotations.

This galaxy is also designed as flocculent spiral because do not have a well defined spiral arms and many discontinuous arms.

Although we are satisfied with the results obtained, we hope in the future to be able to do more sessions of this spectacular galaxy but with another type of telescope, for example with one that has been standing in the room like a Roman column for about eight months ...
