Description

The Rosette Nebula (NGC 2237) is an emission nebula in Monocerus, about 5,000 light-years away from Earth.

At the centre of the nebula is NGC 2244, an open star cluster thought to be about 4 million years old. The stars in the cluster emit charged particles (called stellar winds) that carve the surrounding clouds of gas and dust into the shape we see.

The Rosette Nebula is still creating stars.
