Description

I took advantage of a few days with pretty good seeing to collect 7 eight minute images of this pair of galaxy groups. NGC 6217 is only 25 million light years from us, while the grouping around UGC 10509 are 10 times more distant at around 250 million light years.

The faint broad outer arms of NGC 6217 (Arp 185) are just becoming visible above the light pollution in my suburb. The combination of illness this last winter, bad weather and COVID this spring and onward have robbed me of visits to dark sky sites since last early fall. I am sure those outer arms would really pop under a dark sky.

Each of the 8 minute images used to produce this image was a live stack of 240 two second subs.
