Description

IC1396. The Elephants Trunk nebula in Cepheus. I was finally able to image the entire structure with the widefield Sharpstar 61 scope. This was a very challenging  acquisition. With no astronomical darkness and only 2-3 hours a night of nautical darkness, I had to piece this image together over 6 weeks. I started and finished my imaging time based on the sun reaching 12 degrees below the horizon. That's the best I can ask for this time of year. A total of 33 hours was needed to get a decent signal to noise ratio to swamp out the bortle 8/9 skies. Being this far north has some unique challenges, super short nights and fighting against the aurora borealis. The trade-off is many of the great targets in Cepheus and Cassiopeia are curcumpolar and available to image all year round so I can take my time. I kept the stars a lit brighter than I usually would. I was trending for a while at really minimizing the stars to bring more of the nebula out. I decided to stop doing that as the stars, just as much as the nebula, are part of the image.

Thanks for looking
Clear skies
Dan.
