Description

Check out this closeup of the Flame Nebula in narrowband. Typically imaged alongside the Horsehead nebula, we took the opportunity to capture it solo with a C8 telescope. The bright star in the shot is Alnitak, the easternmost star of Orion’s Belt. Radiation of Alnitak ionizes the Flame Nebula’s hydrogen gas. As it begins to cool, it emits energy in the form of light, causing the visible glow behind the swirled wisps of dust.

Thanks to Rob Calfee for letting us use his C8!
