Description

This image captures the northern half of the Antlia Galaxy Cluster, located 110 million light years away in the constellation of Antlia at a declination of -35 degrees.

The Antlia Galaxy Cluster is the third closest cluster system to us.  Only the Fornax Cluster and Virgo Cluster are closer. The Antlia Cluster contains over 200 members and is split into 2 halves, north and south.  The northern half of the cluster shown in this image is anchored by the large elliptical NGC 3268.  One-half degree south, out of this field of view, is the southern half of the cluster, which is similarly anchored by NGC 3258.

NGC 3268 is a magnitude 12 elliptical galaxy which spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 140,000 light years.

The large galaxies surrounding NGC 3268 are all spiral galaxies.  The most interesting in structure is the double ring galaxy NGC 3269, centered in the top half of the image.
