Description

Pleiades, or the Seven Sisters, is a bright star cluster in the constellation of Taurus. It is made of seven bright stars (Alcyone, Maia, Taygeta, Celaeno, Electra, Merope and Sterope), but only six of them are visible.

This has the 45th index in the catalog created by the famous astronomer Charles Messier. Hence it is also popular as Messier 45 (M45). But this cluster was known much before that. Galileo published a sketch in 1610 that showed 36 stars that he could see with his telescope. The earliest known depiction of the Pleiades is from is about 17,000 years old: a cave drawing in the Lascaux Cave in France.

In Indian Astronomy, this cluster is known as Krittika (কৃত্তিকা). The lunar month of Kartik (কার্তিক) is derived from the Krittika and the first new moon of this lunar month is celebrated as Diwali. The seven stars are perceived as the seven wives of the seven Rishies in Ursa Major/Big Deeper constellation (Atri, Angiras, Marichi, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu and Vasishta) and their Indian names are Anasuya, Puloma, Arundhati, Shraddha, Havubhuh, Gati and Santati.

In Japan, this cluster is known as Subaru. The Japanese car manufacturer Subaru took its name from this cluster to represent the companies that formed together to create Fuji Heavy Industries. Their logo contains 6 stars on a blue background.
