Description

The Cocoon Nebula in is a often imaged, obscure patch of hydrogen alpha and some refection elements located on the outskirts of Cygnus near Lacerta. It is a dusty and dirty are of the sky sitting in a dense star field. I was imaging in Ha during a full moon and running quick stacks every 5 hours of integration to see how deep the Ha went. I knew there was decent Ha in the background but I was surprised at how much was actually there. I ended up stopping at 25 hours worth of Ha as I started to see the limit of what I could capture. After the Ha was done I went after the "foreground" dust. There was a lot of it! With just over 500 exposures with luminance, it almost filled entirely the frame with faint dust. I had to stretch the image far less or the whole image be dust. It is a very contrasting image with many elements. The background Ha being obscured by foreground dust and the bright Cocoon nebula with some reflection nebula surrounding it. I plate solved with the PGC objects showing up as I was able to capture many faint fuzzies in the background. Tour the image and you will see some of these small hidden gems.

Its a little different version of the Cocoon, but I wanted to try and get all the elements into one image. The wide field allowed me to do this at the expense of some of the finer detail in the Cocoon itself. However, looking at the Cocoon it seems to be obscured as well by dust and seems soft in most image out there. The finer detail may need some processing that is above my level to bring out.
