Description

The Seagull Nebula in H-alpha

-------------------------

Named the "Seagull Nebula", although it looks more like a rising phoenix spreading its wings, IC 2177 is a huge complex of ionized gas and dust 3,700 light-years away from us.

This is the result of 10.5 hours of H-alpha data on the Seagull Nebula, taken with a color camera (ZWO ASI294MC Pro).

Notable features:

Many interesting features of the nebula are visible in this image, such as the finer gas and dust structures in the Seagull's 'head' as well as in and around its 'wings'.

Also visible on the center-right, under one of the Seagull's 'wings', is a "bow shock": a shockwave created when the interstellar gas of the nebula interacts with radiation winds and outflowing gas from the double star system "FN CMa".

I am curently working on an HaRGB image of the Seagull Nebula as well.
