Recently I was speaking with a former astronomer who after seeing my image of LDN 1251 said that he used to work with Herschel Space Telescope data and he had some submillimeter data of LDN 1251 somewhere. I asked very kindly if they found it to please let me know because obviously I was curious to see it. Here was his description of the image he showed me :

"I composited data from the Herschel Space Telescope at 3 bands, 160 micrometers, 250 micrometers and 350 micrometers.Resampling performed with Aladin. Compositing in Photoshop trying the Hubble Palette (but it's not as gorgeous as optical photos).In an optical image, you see the grey-ish areas, usually dark in optical images, because it's dust obscuring the visible ambient light. But this dust emits a greybody radiation in the micrometer wavelengths and therefore is bright from 70 microns to 2mm. Starless image as most of the stars you see in the linked image don't emit much light in these wavelengths."

I asked if he would mind that I make a composite with my own optical image and share it and he said "sure!"So I resized, cropped and manually registered the images and overlaid them in photoshop, then created a gif to show the different layers. I think It makes for an interesting result.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
