Description

CG4 is a cometary globule in Puppis. As others have remarked, it reminds me very much of the doomsday machine in Star Trek TOS. That aside, cometary globules usually have dusty heads and long tails which give them the appearance of comets. However, the head of CG4 has been ruptured by something unknown. The galaxy it appears to be advancing toward is much further away and is merely in line of sight. This is designated ESO257-019 and is a spiral galaxy seen almost edge on. This galaxy is 100 million light years away whereas CG4 is only 1300 light years away. Nonetheless, its positioning makes for an interesting image. The other galaxy on the left of the image is NGC2427.

Description: Sorry for the revisions. I am experimenting with the generalised hyperbolic stretch script. This is an attempt at balancing the histogram a little more which toned down the red.
