Description

Mount Bromo is an active volcano and is part of the Tengger mountains, in East Java, Indonesia. At 2,329 meters it is not the highest peak of the massif, but certainly the most famous. The name Bromo comes from the Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. A typical way to visit and view Mount Bromo is from the nearby mountain village of Cemoro Lawang. 4x4s takes one up from the village to various view points along the way to the top, and the drive itself is quite an adventure. People flock in huge numbers to view the sun rise from these viewpoints and start as early as 2am in the morning in order to gain a nice vantage. Clouds are sometime formed in an inversion layer and a soft cotton cover can be seen covering the landscape with clear skies above. Depending on the level of volcanic activity, the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation sometimes issues a warning not to visit Mount Bromo.

Even though I am not a fan of stacking images and prefer tracking instead, in this location I had no choice but to stack images as the Southern Pole Star is only 8 degrees above the horizon and covered with haze, which made polar alignment impossible. The sky is therefore not as detailed and crisp as seen in my other tracked images, apologies for that. The image is composited to give a more balanced appearence with the Milky way shifted to the left and lowered from it's original position.
