Description

The Angel Nebula is a complex of reflection and dark nebulae including NGC2170, VdB68-69 and LBN993,995,999. Other minor reflection/dark nebula are also visible around the Angel. The area is filled with background dust which is typical of the Orion and Monoceros regions.

The Angel rises directly overhead at my latitude so that along with a Bortle 2 zone provided excellent data. I threw away subs even slightly affected by clouds so as not to lower the general quality of the final stack.

The final result looked like a flower that was blooming from its stem so I decided to name it as such.

Regarding the thumbnail...

This image was taken in a Malaysian rainforest state park. The first night out was fantastic, it was clear and I managed to gather a couple of hours for several targets each. The 8" reflector I brought along showed objects I could never hope to see under city skies. During a cloudy second day while chatting with the locals, I asked on a whim whether they'd recently spotted any tigers over the river border that officially separates the state park from the town area. They said a tiger was spotted just the week before on the town area side. I wasn't thrilled as that would be on the same side as the isolated hill I was imaging at about 20 kilometers away from town. I guess I was naive in thinking that tigers would only appear over the river borders as:
1) Rainforests don't really have borders and can't be fenced as the vegetation is too dense.
2) Tigers can swim

I have seen tigers in night zoos before and they're very active after dark, constantly prowling and looking at visitors like food. They would swim across the moat and it wouldn't be safe if not for the high walls.

The final night was clear with sporadic clouds. After hearing what the locals said, I was really nervous but decided to go for it. A couple of hours in, I heard roars. They came from a distance so it wasn't terrifyingly loud, but judging from the way they rolled across the hills, it was definitely powerful. From the sounds, they were either from wolves, bears... or tigers... There wasn't any point in rushing to pack up since a fully setup EQ6R rig was too heavy to simply pickup and shove into the car. So I camped inside my SUV while the rig continued to run. I left the door slightly open for fresh air and a small view of the night sky. The roars occurred another 5-6 times. Once they stopped for an extended period, I packed up as quickly and quietly as I could. Fog is uncommon on the equator, but since I was in a hilly area, clouds would roll over the hills and roads so it was an experience driving through such clouds at night.

Here's a video of a juvenile tiger spotted by others on the same road I drove to the imaging location https://www.facebook.com/reel/3310503742497709. The screenshot above was based on that.
