Description

I started from scratch (including processing calibration frames and stacking lights) for this third pass at an image I captured in August 2022. It is a personal favorite of mine because of how I captured it. What you see is the result of 250 30-second subs (2 hours, 10 minutes) taken with a completely portable setup including a regular photography tripod and the Star Adventurer Mini (SAM). No go-to, no guide scope, just tracking after a manual (using the eyepiece and Polaris) polar alignment. There is a video on my YouTube channel called "Red Lagoon" that shows how I planned and captured the images. I am still stunned at how clear the images turned out and how well the S.A.M. tracked unguided. This is M8: the Lagoon Nebula next to M20: the Trifid Nebula.
