Description

Maybe it is not the place, since it was nor acquired by myself, but I think it is fitting for the moment: we are at only 530.000 km from the Pluto/Caron system, and it is a feat to celebrate!

The similarities with Triton are amazing. I vividly remember the Voyager Neptune flyby, more than 25 years ago, and the mesmerizing images of Triton, the "cantaloupe" terrain, the poverty of impact craters, the geysers, the thin atmosphere... Pluto will be much better!

Three frame animation, made from stacked images - 3 each - from the .jpg (come on JPL!!!) at http://pluto.jhuapl.edu/soc/Pluto-Encounter/index.php.

North pole is up, and is the brightest area at the top of the image. The "heart of Pluto" is coming in to view, and will be the higher resolution images, in the next 10 hours. And counting...
