Description

Comets, even when not visible, are fascinating objects. Perhaps because finding them, catching the best moment to photograph them, and processing their images are not always obvious. This is 103P/Hartley, a peanut-shaped periodic comet with a 6.48-year orbital period. It is located in Gemini, at 0.39 AU from Earth and 1.06 AU from the Sun. Its apparent magnitude is 9.2, requiring a binocular or a small telescope to observe it. It was discovered in 1986 by Malcolm Hartley and visited by the Deep Impact spacecraft in 2010 as part of the EPOXI mission. It has a thin and elongated tail, inclined by 45° with respect to the Earth’s line of sight, but barely visible due to its low brightness and the sky glow.
