Description

NGC 2264 is a captivating region in the constellation Monoceros, approximately 2,600 light-years away from Earth. Young open cluster of stars, whose arrangement forms the distinct shape of a Christmas tree

The Cone Nebula, a dark, tapering pillar of interstellar dust and gas, lies within this stellar nursery. Imaging NGC 2264 unveils a celestial beauty, showcasing the radiant stars of the open cluster against the backdrop of the intricate nebular structures.

The interplay of light and shadow, coupled with the dynamic processes of star formation, makes NGC 2264 a fascinating subject, offering a glimpse into the ongoing birth and evolution of stars within our Milky Way galaxy.

It was unplanned but nice to have a unique object which is NGC 2261, also known as Hubble's Variable Nebula at the lower left of the image   It was fun for me to know that its brightness and structure can vary due to interactions with the star R Monocerotis, which is embedded within it ...!!!
