Description

IC 1396 is a large area of dust and ionized gas located in the constellation Cepheus. This area is lit up by the very intense ultraviolet light given off by the massive star HD 206267 which is the bright white star in the middle of IC 1396. It is a spectroscopic binary system with a third star thought to be also gravitational bound. This system has a stellar wind velocity of 3,225 km/s which is incredibility strong, strong enough to destroy forming planetary disks that are too close to these intense stars. The ultraviolet light emitted from these stars causes compression of denser globules located in IC 1396 that promotes star formation, and if the stars are far enough away from the violent stellar winds of HD 206267 they likely will have protoplanetary discs which will evolve into their own solar systems.
