Description

Ngc 6946 is a beautiful face-on Sc type spiral galaxy with very nicely displayed open arms. It is quite easy to see visually - it is a magnitude 8.9 object. Being fairly near at 10MLy it measures 11' x 9' in the sky and fits nicely on my MX5C image scale. It is, however, of very low surface brightness, 14.5 magnitudes per square arc min. so it is not an easy object to image well.

My shot shows the limitations of my technique quite nicely, as the stars are not exactly pin point small! 50 x 60 second unguided exposures added together has inevitably blurred the final result but has resulted in a colourful, reasonably noise-free rendition of this beautiful object.
