Description

IC 5067, part of the Pelican Nebula, is a star-forming region about 1800 light-years away, where new stars are coalescing out of the gas and dust. A few "tendrils', like the one to the upper right of the centre, are columns of dust blown away by one or more stars outside the image, to the upper left. The new star at the tip of the tendril is emitting jets of gas to the side. It's a so-called Herbig-Haro object. The sideways jets are both bent downwards by the same stellar winds which are creating the tendril. The generic name for these tendrils is "elephant's trunk".

For version B I reduced the magenta cast of the stars using PhotoShop (select colour[magenta] -> reduce saturation) then changed the colour balance using the recipe of Bob Franke: http://bf-astro.com/hubblep.htm

For version C I increased the contrast significantly, using a PhotoShop plugin.
