Description

Omega Centauri, NGC 5139, is a globular cluster in the constellation of Centaurus. Located at a distance of 15,800 light-years (4,850 pc), it is the largest globular cluster in the Milky Way at a diameter of roughly 150 light-years. It is estimated to contain approximately 10 million stars and a total mass equivalent to 4 million solar masses.

Omega Centauri is so distinctive from the other galactic globular clusters that it is thought to have an alternate origin as the core remnant of a disrupted dwarf galaxy.

Captured here with an ASI1600MM-C camera, running at -25C. Image built of solely RGB channels, comprised of 45 x 30s subs for each channel. I also shot high gain Ha which I considered using in this image but it was tending to overpower the subtle colours of the RCG layers, even if I dialed back the opacity. I may revist this when I work out how to incorporate the Ha. Surprisingly there was alot of Ha in this object.

Scope was a TS Photoline 115mm APO reduced to f5 (from f7), mount was the CGX
