NGC2903 is a Field Barred Spiral Galaxy, more than 20.5 million light-years away.

At magnitude 8.9, NGC 2903 is seen from an oblique angle, with apparent dimensions of 12.6 x 6.6 arcminutes. As with most face-on spiral galaxies, it is easy to see the dust lanes and emission nebulae (pink regions). NGC 2905 is a bright knot (star cloud) in NGC 2903.

At a distance of 20.5 million light years, NGC 2903 is about 80,000 light-years across - just a little smaller than the Milky Way. Other similarities to our own galaxy include its spiral structure and central bar. One striking difference, however, is the presence of mysterious hot spots in NGC 2903's core, seen in Hubble Space Telescope images. These hot spots were found to be bright young globular clusters, in contrast to the uniformly old globular clusters found in our Milky Way Galaxy.

NGC 2903 exhibits an exceptional rate of star formation activity, in a 2000 light-year wide ring surrounding its center. Astronomers hypothesize that the gravity of the central bar expedites star formation in this ring. NGC 2903 is also bright in radio, infrared, ultraviolet, and x-ray bands.
