Description

Discovered by Johann Bode, along with M81, this edge on spiral delivers a wealth of detail visually. Imaging brings out a confusion of colour, in this 'starburst' galaxy, thought to be due to the influence of the giant M81 in the past. I tried processing this in Startools, but gave up when I could not develop the colour from my LRGB subs, and instead this is a quick and dirty result from manipulation in iPhoto editor, which appears to show just as much detail. I'll upload my Startools effort and Halpha image (using Optolong dual-band line filter), which does show the hydrogen filaments, but without the glorious colour that other imagers achieve.

This is one to try at native f10 of my SCT, assuming I am well aligned and autoguiding.

Description: This version was stacked and aligned in Meade Envisage v10, then processed in Startools v1.5, but I struggled to draw out the colour, which is a bit of a fudge.

Description: Another version imaged through my Optolong L-enhance line filter. There is definitely a hint of the delicate hydrogen filaments that stream out of the core (at ~500km/s). Again, no joy with the colour, which was evident in the stacked frames in Envisage.

Description: My last version of LRGB frames taken through an Optolong L-eNhance dual narrow band filter and Meade DSI IIC one shot colour camera. 12 x 5 min frames aligned and stacked in Meade Envisage v10, and then manipulated using iPhoto editing software on my iPhone. The image is over processed and artistic at best (or worst), but has not been retouched, and does allow the red hydrogen emission regions to show up. Feel free to comment on which version you think is best. Thanks.

Description: This latest version, taken through my Optolong NBF, was developed using Startools colour constancy tool, and then further saturated. The whole image feels a bit unreal, over deconvolution has created some bizarre artefacts. Nevertheless the H-alpha filaments streaming from the core are now clearly visible, even if the cigar does seem to have caught fire.

Description: The final version colour processed in Startools. I'm happy with the level of detail and hint of the H-alpha filaments in the core. I only used an ir cut filter to reduce star bloat.
