Description

This object, defined as NGC 6885 and Caldwell 37, is an open star cluster of about 40 stars located 2000 light years away in the Vulpecula constellation. Visually, this object appears pleasing although not terribly inspiring. It is a gathering of stars around the bright star Vulpecula 20, which is seen slightly upper left of the center of the image. But, it gets interesting when trying to understand exactly what comprises NGC 6885, and what comprises the nearby NGC 6882. In fact, in the excellent book The Caldwell Objects authored by Stephen James O'Meara, 4 detailed pages are devoted to the history of this confusing subject without reaching a satisfying conclusion.

Many sky guides simply say that the two NGC objects overlap, some saying that an error was involving in the early designations. Astrobin, as well as The Night Sky Observer's Guide, indicates that the bright stars comprise a larger NGC 6882, while NGC 6885 consists of the fainter smaller grouping immediately surrounding 20 Vulpeculae. But some guides say the opposite. It is amazing to me that so much confusion involves something which is both a NGC and a Caldwell object, to the point that we don't even know exactly what it is.

If I were just scanning the heavens and came across this sight, I don't think I would even give it a second glance, much less a Caldwell designation. It reminds me a bit of the infamous undeserved Messier 40 object (the double star). Nevertheless, it is a pretty sight even if (in my opinion) it is not quite deserving of Caldwell status.
