Description

This object is an edge-on barred spiral galaxy located 100 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo. In the Catalogue of 1000 Named Galaxies, it is called Pyxidophorus Virginis. This means the "box-bearing" galaxy, because of the boxy shape of the barred core.

This galaxy is large, about 50% larger than our Milky Way. I really like how the dusty disk interacts visually with the golden glowing boxy core. The foreground Milky Way stars nicely frame the galaxy.

There are conflicting reports on whether its neighboring galaxy (NGC 5740, just off the image at upper right) is gravitationally interacting with it. It doesn't appear that NGC 5746 is distorted in any way in this image.
