Description

M 42 ( is also known as NGC 1976) is called a Diffuse Nebula or Nebulous Star Cluster which is located in constellation Orion, situated south of the Orion Belt.. It is also known as the "Orion Nebula"and is 1,344 plus or minus 20 light years distance from earth. Orion Nebula is one of the brightest nebula, and is visable to the naked eye in the night sky. Also included in this image you can see NGC 1973 also known as the Running Man Nebula.

Charles Messier certainly did not "discover" this prominent naked eye object, but he did determine its exact position on March 1769 with three other Messier items (M43,M44 and M450. It is the most rewarding deep sky object for a telescope of any size. a notable feature of the nebula is the Trapezium, a bright compact cluster of four stars arranged in a trapezoidal shape within the nebula just belowthe "head of the bird".

M 43 (also know as NGC 1982 and also called De Mairan's Nebuls) is the head of the Orion Nebula. Like M 42 it is located in the constellation Orion. The De Mairan's nebula is separated from the main nebula by a lane of dust. It was discovered by Jean-Jacques Dortous de Mairan before 1731.
