Description

Last night the skies finally cleared long enough to get another look at Mars, now two weeks beyond opposition.

It was cold, dipping to 6 degrees, and I confess to a lot of fumbling around in the dark with fingers that were numb. But the air was stable enough to get a few videos and a decent image. It may be the last one I get for a while. I've struggled a lot trying to capture Mars this season, but finally overcame the weather and my mistakes.

I improved my technique and, more important, used a new camera: ASI 1462 MC with a much faster frame rate and excellent resolution. It made a difference. This is a WinJupos combination of three stacks  for a total frame count of about 2,000.

The photo shows the Solis Lacus or “Eye of Mars” region, as well as Mare Sirenum in the south latitudes. The big desert expanse at mid latitudes centers on the Tharsus region, home to Mars’ biggest volcanoes.

Tonight I'll be warm by the fire.
