M4 (RonAdams) - AstroBin

M4

This image was sort of a test image. I began astrophotography using a 120mm refractor. However it's been about 5 years since I've imaged with this scope. Recently I took the scope apart and cleaned all the exposed glass on the primary objective. The night that I finished cleaning the lens I took the scope out for a test run visually and I was pleased with the result. I've been wanting to try the scope again for imaging after I did the cleaning. It was cloudy last night and tonight. Not really suitable for imaging. However I decided that I would bring my scope and a Bahtinav Mask out and find a star to see if I could find where a tight focus was on the scope. I was able to get a tight focus on the star Deneb. This pleased me so I looked around to see if there was anywhere that I could image. The area around Antares seemed free of clouds so I decided to take an image of M4. I got a decent image so now I decided that I would continue to image until clouds shut me down. Clouds didn't shut me down but a Meridian flip did. As it turned out some of the time I was imaging through clouds. I had to trash 10 or 12 of my light frames because of the clouds. I did get enough usable light frames to process an image. I'm pleased with the performance of the scope. On a better night I would have gotten a better result. With all of that said please enjoy my most recent image of M4.

Description: I was looking at some of my images today and I decided there were some things that I didn't like about this image. I completely reprocessed the image beginning with aligning and stacking in Deep Sky Stacker. I attempted to try and improve the blown out stars in the image and to also improve the star field as a whole. I also tried to bring out more detail in the little cluster NGC 6144.
