Description

This object is a HII region located 5000 light years away in the southern constellation of Scorpius at a declination of -31 degrees. It is also known as RCW 134 and Gum 69.

The region is ionised by the star HD 161853, the brightest white star in the image. In the center of the image is an interesting band of dust silhouettted against the Ha region.

Two star clusters are visible in the image. NGC 6425, a bright colorful open cluster of 25 stars located 2500 light years away, is easily seen in the lower right corner. At the opposite end of the visibility spectrum is Terzan 6, visible as a tiny faint orange smudge on the left edge of the image just above center. This globular cluster is 25,000 light years away.
