Description

This object is a spiral galaxy located 130 million light years away in the constellation of Canes Venatici at a declination of +40 degrees. This 11.9 magnitude galaxy spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 150,000 light years. We are viewing this galaxy about half-way between face-on and edge-on.

This is a beautiful slightly barred galaxy with many visible star clusters and HII regions. Most of these star clusters and HII regions are on the lower right side, towards the Hickson 68 galaxy group which is slightly out of the frame. The galaxy arms are discontinuous and hard to trace from the core to the outer edge. Faint star streams extend far beyond the end of the arms.
