Description

Cosmic Cataclysm (Abell 85, CTB-1): This extremely faint nebula  is what remains of a catastrophic event.  About 10,000 years ago a massive star exploded as a supernova, leaving an expanding bubble of gas that has grown to nearly the size of the full Moon on the sky.  Known as the Medulla, Garlic or "Popped Balloon" the nebula resides in the constellation Cassiopeia.

Equipment and processing used: Celestron RASA-11 telescope with ZWO ASI294 MC Pro one shot color camera riding on an iOptron CEM120-EC2 mount.  N.I.N.A./PHD2 used for image acquisition.

This is an "HOO" image, combining 223 individual five minute exposures (18.6 hours of data), shot through an IDAS-NBZ dual-band H-alpha / OIII filter for the nebula, with 4.8 hours of RGB data shot through an IDAS-LPS-D1 filter for the stars.  Captured in August and September, 2023 from our observatory in Mariposa, Ca.   Processed using PixInsight.
