Description

Author Comment:  Winter 2022/2023 has been absolutely terrible -- including more than a half a dozen atmospheric rivers, near-constant clouds and a couple large snowstorms that had people stranded in their mountain homes.  Though it all, I've had almost no opportunity for astrophotography.  After two months of not seeing the stars, I finally had a clear night in the forecast so I headed to my dark-sky site.  Unfortunately the clouds (and bad seeing) overruled the forecast and rolled right in by midnight, ruining the targets for my other telescopes.  The fast RASA, however, in combination with sharper data from  December, captured enough for this nice rendition.

About the target:

The Orion Nebula, also known as Messier 42 or NGC 1976, is a massive cloud of gas and dust located in the constellation Orion. It is one of the most famous and easily observable objects in the night sky, visible to the naked eye as a faint smudge near the three bright stars that make up Orion's belt.

The nebula is approximately 1,344 light-years away from Earth and is estimated to be around 24 light-years across. It is a stellar nursery where new stars are born, and it contains hundreds of young, hot, and massive stars that are less than a million years old. These stars were formed from the gravitational collapse of the dense gas and dust within the nebula.

The Orion Nebula is also known for its stunning visual appearance. It has a bright central region called the Trapezium, which is made up of four bright stars that illuminate the surrounding gas and dust. The gas and dust are ionized by the intense ultraviolet radiation emitted by the Trapezium stars, causing them to glow brightly in a variety of colors.

The Orion Nebula is so bright, it can be captured with long duration mode on an iPhone!
