Description

Here's an image I took in May during a resonably clear but rather windy night. Even inside my dome the wind was hurtling through the slit and causing some vibrational problems with my rather overweighted GPDX mount. You can clearly see the effect of the wind on the image, the brighter stars are smeared, wheras the fainter parts of the image are relatively unaffected.

The image is of NGC 3938, a very beautiful face-on galaxy in UMa. Although the galaxy is quite bright at magnitude 10.4, the overall surface brightness of the image is 13.7 mags per square arcmin, which is quite difficult. The spiral arms especially are quite faint.

This exposure is of 30x3 mins. Acquired using Astroart 3, processed in Pixinsight and NEAT image for final presentation.
