Description

On the tenth day of the lunar calendar, Mare Imbrium welcomes the sunrise. Under the interplay of light and shadow, the mountain ranges and meteorite craters reveal a unique sense of depth.

Mare Imbrium is located in the center of the photo, a vast basin. The meteor crater to the north is the famous Plato Crater, while the large crater to the south is Copernicus Crater. There are three large craters situated in Mare Imbrium, from north to south they are Aristillus, Autolycus, and Archimedes Crater.

Mare Imbrium is surrounded by a range of mountains, the most notable being the Alps to the north and the Apennines to the southeast. The highest peak on the near side of the moon, Mount Huygens, is located in the Apennine range. The landing site of Apollo 15 is also nearby.
