Description

Title: A quasar near a companion galaxy, NGC 5296

Authors: Arp, H.

Journal: Astrophysical Journal, vol. 210, Dec. 1, 1976, pt. 2, p. L59-L61.

An inspection of National Geographic-Palomar Sky Atlas prints revealed a spiral galaxy NGC 5297 and a smaller companion galaxy NGC 5296. A quasar of redshift 0.963 was spectroscopically determined to be in the vicinity of the companion galaxy. In addition, deep photographic plates of the system obtained later revealed a luminous extension from the companion pointing to the quasar. A compact, disturbed galaxy of redshift 25,900 km/s (that of the other two galaxies is about 2500 km/s) was found to be interacting with NGC 5296.

The above is the abstract from Halton Arp's 1976 paper on the quasar he found near NGC 5297. He also discovered the luminous bridge between NGC 5297 and the quasar. He used the world's largest telescope at the time - the Palomar 200" Reflector. I thought it would be an interesting excercise to see if a 10" reflector and a modern ccd camera could image the quasar and bridge.

Details of the objects in the image as follows:

Object Name Apparent Diameter Magnitude Redshift Dist. from Preceding Object

Main Galaxy NGC 5297 308" 12.5 0.0083

Companion NGC 5296 38" 15.0 0.008 88" from NGC 5297

Compact Pec. cgs G1 9" 18.5 0.0863 29" from NGC 5296

Quasar SBO1 stellar 19.3 0.963 55" from NGC 5296. I'm pretty sure I can see the bridge of material linking the galaxy to the quasar. What do you think?? Sorry about the table - couldn't work out how to format it.
