Description

I was very pleased with my original image of the beautiful Thousand Rubies Galaxy, which I published 3 weeks ago, but felt it could be improved with further work.

I felt I'd reached a stage in my astrophotography where I needed to push my processing skills to a new level, so I downloaded PixInsight and used it to process the same data I used to create the original image.

Despite everything I'd heard about PixInsight being complex and difficult to learn, after a few days at my computer I was very pleased with this result - particularly with the fine nebulosity and colour in the Galaxy's core, as well as the colours of the surrounding stars, which complement the Galaxy and give it context.

I never expected to be able to extract so much detail from the original data - PixInsight did an amazing job.

I consider this a new image rather than a revision, because although it uses the same RGB data as the original image, it was processed using completely different methods and tools.

Approximately 50 small galaxies can be seen in this image, including PGC724525 and PGC48132 near the centre, just below M83.

Special thanks to Rowan for convincing me to try PixInsight, and for helping me to get started.

Description: A small revision to centre the galaxy, and highlight the colour of the core.

C

Description: This revision is a blend of two images processed separately from the same source data - one RGB only, and one LRGB. The provides softer stars with better dynamic range, clearer definition of red and blue stars in the spiral arms, and a nicer rendition of the galaxy's core.
