Description

This image captures a dark nebulae, a bright nebula, two reflection nebulae, and 2 galaxies, all located in the constellation of Cepheus at a declination of +73 degrees. The nebulae are fairly close to us inside of the Milky Way at about 1000 light years distant, while the galaxies are about 100,000 times further away.

Collectively these objects are known as the Shark Nebula.  The body of the shark is the largest object, the bright nebula LBN535. The dark nebula LDN 1235 makes up the shark's snout. Directly to the right, vdB 150 is the bright bluish reflection nebula on top of the shark's head. At the shark's chest is another bright bluish reflection nebula, vdB 149.

At the right center of the image, galaxy UGC 11861 is located above and to the right of the bright white star 16 Cep. This is a magnitude 14 galaxy located 70 million light years away which spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years.

In the lower right corner of the image is galaxy UGC 11818. This is a magnitude 15 galaxy located 100 million light years away which spans 1.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 50,000 light years.
