Description

This is an RGB capture of the iconic Elephant Trunk Nebula, IC1396.  I had recently posted a study on the “other” horsehead and elephant trunk caravan, here, and thought, you know I’ve never gone deep on the trunk itself.  I hoped to get narrowband, but the weather didn’t cooperate, so I decided to see what the RGB looked like…I was astonished.  While the detail in the nebula is not evident in pure RGB, there are other things that do come out.  Like the detail and color in the “eye” and Vdb 142.  Vdb 142 or Van den Berg 142, is tiny bluish barely visible reflection nebula embedded near the 'eye'.    I usually don't set the black point so low, but the stars...look so cool against it.  A backyard plus Mt Pinos capture!    -john
