Description

Hickson 44 is a group of galaxies in the constellation Leo about 80 million light years from Earth.  The two spiral galaxies in the center are edge-on NGC 3190 and the S-shaped NGC 3187.  The face-on spiral galaxy is NGC 3185, and the elliptical galaxy is NGC 3193.  These galaxies show evidence of distortion and enhanced star formation, indicating they are likely gravitationally bound and will eventually merge into a single large elliptical galaxy.  A number of smaller, more distant, galaxies are also visible.
