The Monoceros OB1 molecular nebula complex, also known as the Cone Nebula Complex or by the catalog code Sh2-273, is a large H II region connected to a giant molecular cloud, located in the direction of the constellation of the Unicorn; it includes several reflection nebulae and several dark regions, as well as the famous Cone Nebula, located in a central position with respect to the cloud. It is about 760 parsecs (2480 light years) from the solar system, on the outer edge of the Orion Arm. The region is ionized and excited by the massive stars of the OB Monoceros OB1 association, which coincides almost entirely with the open cluster known as NGC 2264 or Christmas Tree, due to its appearance; the dominant star is S Monocerotis, a blue main sequence star, also visible to the naked eye and mainly responsible for the illumination of the gases of the complex. In total there are 27 high-mass stars in the cloud.
