Description

M16, the Eagle Nebula, is a star forming region 5,700 light years away, only 1-2 million years old, 55x70 light years in size, and filled with 8,100 stars! Many of these stars are the hottest and brightest types (O class) in the universe! For perspective, there are less than 700 stars (including brown dwarfs) within 50 light years of Earth, only 8 of which are A type stars (O and B are hotter and brighter). The Pillars of Creation (center) is a dense region of gas and dust blocking the light of many stars behind it. With the heat and intensity of the stars in this nebula the pillars are slowly being eroded and it is estimated they will only be visible for another 100,000 years. To the top right of the pillars are two very bright O class stars orbiting each other. The bottom of the two is 80 times the mass of our sun and 1 million times bright.
