Description

The Flaming Star Nebula IC405 is an emission and reflection nebula is 500 light years away and 5 light years across. The nebula is powered by the irregular variable star AE Auriga, which is thus The Flaming Star.  In SHO the reflection wisps do not stand out. If you mouse over the image you will see where I added some of the Blue image to the SHO. Unfortunately the B image did not have much exposure time, so the effect is subtle.

Data is from RASC Robotic Telescope, Sierra Remote Observatories, Auberry, California. RCOS 16" f/8.9 (3550mm focal length), Paramount ME and CCD SBIG STX16803 16MP (4096 x 4096), with SBIG RGB, Ha (7nm), OIII (8.5nm), SII (8nm) filters.

My processing  calibrated, registered and stacked the data with DeepSkyStacker. I used Startools to compose as SHO (60SII+40Ha,30SII+30Ha+40OIII,100OIII) and RGB respectively. In Photoshop, the stars were removed using the StarXTerminator plug-in (and manual labor). I used an APF-R protocol to bring out detail (I wrote a PS action based on Christoph Kaltseis's wonderful tutorials. To my understanding it is an unsharp mask on steroids!). Finally RGB stars were added back in as a screen layer.
