Hi

I'm very new to Astrobin, so my apologies if this is the wrong post in the wrong place, but I joined to see what other people in the southern hemisphere have been imaging, share what I've done and learn more about this amazing part of the sky.

I've been living in New Zealand for 8 years, but only really picked up astronomy properly again about a year ago. I've moved from an ETX90 to a Celestron C9.25, which I though was the same thing but bigger. OK, I was wrong. Fast forward one year and I'm a beginner that are starting to get good results. Humbling :-)

I'm zipping around across the sky in Stellaris and I'm looking at Telscopius to explore the absolutely staggering number of deep sky objects we have on this side of the world. I did some Orion nebula imaging, Horsehead nebula (it has always been my dream to get a decent shot of the Horsehead nebula) and Carina. The last few sessions I've been blown away by the Large Magellanic Cloud. Wow. The stuff in there is unbelievable.

One of the many things I've learnt in the first 24 hours of being a member of Astrobin is that my integration times are negligible compared to everyone else, and the images are amazing. In short, I've realised the importance of integration time.

It's now even more important for me to pick the right object and stack up hours of exposure time.

Can I please ask for recommendations?

My field of view with my ASI295MC is 31.7x21.5 arc minutes. I've used Optolong L-eXtreme for the nebulae, and I've done some galaxies without a filter. I live in a Bortle 4 area and I get quite decent darkness.

My tracking is currently limiting me to about 2 minutes exposures, even though I managed to pull off a set of 4 minute exposures of the Pencil Nebula the other night. I've ordered an ZWO OAG and a ZWO ASI174MM guide camera, so I hope I can do longer exposures eventually.

Wow, sorry about the lengthiness of this post. I hope you made it this far ;-)

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Daniel,
Welcome to the madness of astro.
I presume you meant the ASI294MC - a camera I also started with.
You can join some of the groups like Southern Hemisphere  Astro  or New Zealand Astrophotography to see what people are imaging and what integration times they have required to get a descent image.

Hi Logan

Thanks!

I've used a simple mono CCD before and I liked it, but I felt that the cost and complexity of a "proper" mon ocamera for my telescope will have to be the next step, so I went for a colour camera.

I've signed up to the New Zealand Astrophotography group and posted there, thanks!
Cheers,
Dan
