Description

Clear skies are about as rare as unicorns at present in the UK; here's my best effort at trying for a rosette under our inclement winter skies. The seeing was unsteady, but there were clear patches, so I set up my now trusty portable rig and set to work. I managed to collect just two hours data on this bright emission nebula, Sh2-275 in the constellation Monoceros. Lying ~5000 LY this 130 LY diameter cloud of dust and emissions is powered by the open cluster NGC 2244, and forms part of the Monoceros OB2 star forming region.

Taken with my Optolong L-eNhance filter, I did a traditional OSC processing of the HO data in Siril, and also tried Ha/OIII channel extraction and recombination in Pixel Math (starless mouseover). This definitely helps to pull out a bit more of the OIII data, but also noise and gradients under the bright moon. As is my normal workflow now, I processed the stars separately, and used Deep Sky Details AI tools to sharpen and denoise the starless version. In the mouseover, I used deconvolution to sharpen the nebula, which I think worked just as well. Considering all, I'm happy to be posting something, even though it lacks exposure and integration.
