Description

This image FOV containing faint reflection and emission nebulae is located in the constellation of Scorpius at a declination of -26 degrees.

The brightest star in the image is the bright blue 2.9 magnitude star Pi Scorpii, located about 600 light years away.  The blue reflection nebula immediately surrounding this star is vdB 99, one of the less spectacular objects in the vdB catalogue.

The broader area of nebulosity around this star, including the faint red Ha nebulosity near image center, is Sharpless 2-1, the first object in the Sharpless Catalogue.

As seen in the mouseover, this region also contains 4 designated bright nebulae - LBN 1092 to LBN 1095.
