Description

This Star Trails image was taken during an interlude between deep space imaging at the Wiruna dark sky site in rural NSW, Australia.

The star trails are very long due to the 8+ hours of imaging. Although most people had left the site after completion of the main observing event, the accumulated light from torches was also quite striking.

This image utilized 2071x13-second subframes (Total exposure 7 hrs 28 min 43 sec, spanning 8 hrs 3 min 14 sec), omitting some of the earlier frames when the sky was still quite bright.

Processed using Nikon NX Studio, StarStax, and PixInsight.

General Concept. Three different products were developed from the same data - including Nightscape and Star Trails (still) images, as well as a Timelapse video.  The idea was to use compromise exposure and other camera settings that enabled the production of all three products, albeit not necessarily ideal for any one of the products.

Images were taken using a Sigma 20mm f/1.4 lens on a Nikon D750 camera attached to a fixed tripod. In total, 2135x13-second subframes were taken with 14-second intervals at f/2 and ISO1600. Total overall exposure for the night was 7 hrs 42 min 35 sec, spanning 8 hrs 18 min 10 sec.
