Description

2.8 mLY from earth, the Triangulum galaxy, Messier 33, is the third largest galaxy in our local group. It has a low surface brightness, making it all but invisible to the naked eye, except under dark skies. It is easy under Bortle 2 skies in Scotland, but impossible under the light polluted skies of the Midlands, even with averted vision. It's spiral structure was first described by Lord Rosse using his 72" 'leviathan' at Birr Castle, in Ireland, apparent in my image, along with the brightest HII region NGC 605, a 1500 LY emission nebula, and several others dotted around the spiral arms.

Taken under poor seeing and transparency I dithered about posting this, but as I use my Astrobin account as a journal of my astroimaging, rather than an 'art gallery', here it is. The binned data is much cleaner, but with loss of resolution. Captured with my UHC-L filter and Altair 183 OSC, using a 200mm Pentax SLR zoom lens at f5.6, processed in Siril, with star reduction in Nebulosity. The original data (bin 1x1) hows how much noise I was dealing with. Despite using DBE, there is stubborn gradient in the image; no doubt shorter exposures would have been beneficial under such conditions.
