Description

The Horsehead and Flame Nebulae!

5+ hours, 80 exposures, shot on 6 nights between Feb 17th and March 5th, 2023

Probably my 2nd favorite target!

The Horsehead Nebula and the Flame Nebula are two of the most iconic and recognizable features in the night sky. They are both located in the constellation Orion, which is one of the most prominent constellations visible from the northern hemisphere.

The Horsehead Nebula, also known as Barnard 33, is a dark nebula that appears as the shape of a horse's head against a bright, glowing background of gas and dust. It is located in the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, approximately 1,500 light-years away from Earth. The Horsehead Nebula is about 3 light-years across and is primarily made up of hydrogen gas and dust.

The Flame Nebula, also known as NGC 2024, is an emission nebula located just to the east of the Horsehead Nebula. It is a bright, reddish region of gas and dust that is illuminated by the nearby star Alnitak, which is one of the three stars that make up Orion's Belt. The Flame Nebula is also about 1,500 light-years away from Earth and is approximately 5 light-years across.

Both the Horsehead and Flame Nebulas are part of a larger region of gas and dust called the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. This complex is a vast cloud of gas and dust that is actively forming new stars, and it is one of the closest regions of star formation to Earth. The Horsehead and Flame Nebulas are just two examples of the beautiful and fascinating features that can be found within this complex.
