Description

The Dolphin Head Nebula, aka Sh2-308, never gets above about 30 degrees altitude from our house, where this was imaged (Bortle 6-7 skies). I got lucky in December/January with a few nights of clear skies, not too much moon, and good seeing (though a target this low has a lot of atmosphere in front of it).

This is basically an HOO image, though I did gather some SII and merged it with the Ha data. The stars were done with R, G, B filters.

The star at almost the very center is a Wolf-Rayet-type star: big and hot. I will likely continue to gather data on this over time to try to further reduce the noise. As the saying goes, you know you have enough data when you are no longer willing to double what you already have.

It's in Canis Major, about 4,500 light-years away, and is also known as RCW 11 and LBN 1052.
